Joan Bankemper’s ceramic vessels grow out of her 20-year commitment to creating urban gardens with the help of surrounding communities. Her vases incorporate flowers, birds, bees, all the symbols of the garden and the creatures that help pollinate the flowers. Working as a collagist, Bankemper creates large-scale vessels, beginning with a glass vase at the core. Casting from a collection of 1,500 molds, she creates myriad shapes and sizes, combining historical ceramics, contemporary china and hand-built objects. Bankemper creates an original ceramic tableau where at every angle there is something rich, textured and layered for the eye to behold.
